Michigan / Ross MBA Interview Report: Round 3 / Second-year Student / On-Campus

The following Michigan / Ross MBA interview report was submitted to Clear Admit by a Round 3 applicant. Good luck to them!

I attended the Round 3 Interview Day at Ross. There is only one on-campus interview day for Round 3, and there were about 45 people there. A week before the interview, Ross will invite you to a GroupMe Group to get in touch with other interviewees. We used the group to plan out rideshares from the airport and also schedule a dinner for the night before the interview. This was really awesome, and just emphasizes Ross’s collaborative culture.
Warning to all applicants. Ann Arbor is flooded with undergraduates and is a complete collegetown. It’s very similar to Ithaca, New York. The undergraduate population is huge and can be overwhelming and Ann Arbor is not at all an urban environment.

The day started off with the interviews. We were separated into two timeslots, one that interviewed at 9 and the other at 930. I interviewed in the first slot, while the second group had time to mingle with the other interviewees/ current students. The interview was with a current second-year student. He had absolutely nothing in common with me career-wise and the interview was blind. He took notes on his computer the entire time, which was distracting as I couldn’t make eye contact. There were definitely a few curve ball questions.

Questions were:

Why MBA?
Why Ross?
What was your motivation for pursuing each of your jobs/roles?
What do you do in your current role?
What are your most proud of career-wise?
Describe yourself in a newspaper headline. (curveball)
Describe a time when you had a conflict with someone at work.
Any questions? (I had a ton)

After both groups interviewed, we were led to a pizza restaurant for the group interview session. The groups were of 6 people, and there were two second-year students moderating. I thought the group interview was excellent, and also highlighted Ross’s collaborative community and unique approach.

First part was an individual exercise/ice breaker warm-up. Everyone choose two words from a bag – one word was a business type and the other was an object. Using those two words, everyone had to come up with a short story. Some of the stories people chose were personal experiences, others were completely made up. My words both sucked, so I just made up a completely ridiculous story.

For the actual group exercise, we all pooled our ‘object’ words and one of the moderators chose one of the ‘business types’. We need had to use our object words to come up with a business problem and solution for the business type and presented it to the two second year students. It was a lot of fun! Then we had ate pizza.

The rest of the day was student panels, tour of Ross building (beautiful, but filled with undergrads), and ended with a mock class taught by a professor who was voted one of the best 40 under 40 business school professors.

Fun and activity filled day!

CMU / Tepper Interview Report: Round 2 / Adcom / On-Campus

The following CMU / Tepper interview report was submitted to Clear Admit by a Round 2 applicant. Good luck to them!

I was invited to Tepper’s Women’s weekend, which was held on campus. There were about 50 women there, and there was a day of events geared towards showing women why Tepper is a good place to pursue an MBA. It was an exhausting day, with a lot of sessions including a mock class, a presentation by career services, etc. I interviewed first thing in the morning, but the interviews ran all day.

The interview went okay, but it did seem a bit rehearsed on the interviewer’s end. She formatted it as Past, Present, Future. Talking about past experience, motivations for applying now, and what my post-MBA plans are. There were a lot of questions and I didn’t have too much time to ask questions at the end.

Questions were:

Walk me through your résumé.
Why an MBA?
Why Tepper?
Tell me a time where you had to make a quick decision.
Tell me a time where you interacted with someone from a different culture/ethnicity at work. (Recommendation to all interviewees – PREPARE FOR THIS QUESTION)
Tell me a time where you had to overcome a challenge at work.
Tell me time where you applied something you learned outside of work at work.
What are your Post-MBA plans?
What is your Plan B?
What will be the most difficult part of transitioning into an MBA program for you?
