Remembering our military - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Today we remember our troops – including more than 700 Carolina graduates – who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may be free.

The idea for UNC's Book of Names memorial honoring our fallen Tar Heels originated with #KenanFlagler alum Robert W. Eaves (BSBA ’58), who was inspired by a visit to the American cemetery in Normandy. Eaves and fellow ROTC Carolina alumni Sherwood H. Smith Jr. (’56) and Charles M. Winston Sr. (’53) led a committee that raised $300,000, mostly from ROTC alumni, for the UNC memorial.
