MBA Admissions Mashup: Graduation, Alumni, and Relationships
Every Wednesday, we share a round-up of the latest news from admissions blogs at the top business schools. This week we have something for everyone — applicants targeting Round 1 deadlines, current MBAs, and graduates! After all, it’s May and many MBAs out there have either finished their first year of business school or are celebrating graduation. With that in mind we’re featuring graduation excitement from b-school blogs (we’re sprinkling in some advice for good measure as well).
It’s a bit odd to kick off a blog article titled “Graduation” with “failure”, but we wanted to end this post on a happy note. The Dartmouth / Tuck admissions blog shared three ways to frame failure in your MBA application. Think about it. How many times have you been asked: “Name one failure and how you learned from it.” In answering this question, applications and job seekers must strike the right balance between humility and hubris. The Tuck admissions committee suggests that applicants “Turn the tables around. Showcase the positive you. Absolutely describe your failures, but while thinking of them as practical teachers in a school called life. What did you learn from the experience? How did you do things differently going forward? What has that experience meant to you?”
Being in relationships is already tough, but throw in getting an MBA? It’s a wonder how many MBAs perform this balancing act. During Women’s Week at Duke / Fuqua, the Association of Women in Business held a panel on the importance of balancing relationships while in business school. Connie Chai, Duke / Fuqua MBA, Class of 2016, attended the event and shared three tips on how she and her classmates maintain their relationships during this hectic time in their lives. “Balancing relationships can be a challenge. Business school will seem all encompassing at times, but never forget that your partner is there to support you as well! I made an effort, to at the very least, call my fiancĂ© before I went to bed each night so that we could catch up and hear about each other’s day. One of my classmates actually put a reminder on her calendar to call her husband at a certain time each day. I found that having someone to share my day with (and vent at times) was a great stress reliever since my fiancĂ© could offer an unbiased viewpoint.”
At UPenn / Wharton, the admissions committee is basking in the excitement of graduation and making Round 3 calls to admits last week.
On May 6, the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University held its commencement ceremony. To celebrate and to help their grads remember (read: cherish) the moment forever, they put together a rather touching video recalling the day’s event.
What happens after graduation? The U. Chicago Booth MBA admissions blog wants you to watch their new video series spotlighting alumni and their first year post-MBA. “Meet Jefferson Kohler, MBA ’15, associate brand manager for Johnnie Walker at Diageo. It was Jefferson’s pre-MBA dream to work at Diageo—he even wrote about it in his application to Booth. Now, he uses Booth’s data-driven approach in marketing the most widely distributed Scotch Whiskey in the world. “
From all of us at Clear Admit, congratulations to all the MBA Grads out there! That’s all for this week. Catch you next week on another MBA Admissions Mashup.
